I propose this, kill the word “manager”. KICK IT, shoot, only to do with it. One of the myths longer in the business world is that leaders and managers are somewhat different. Not true. Furthermore, I genuinely believe that this myth has been damaging. Invariably, the leader is said to be superior in various ways to the “manager.” There is no shortage of famous thinkers (Peter Drucker, for example) that have helped perpetuate this myth. Note that two columns and one called “leaders” and the other “managers” and then fill each column with the behaviors or traits that are seemingly contradictory. To make my point, consider the following list from a website of the U.S. government (http://www.govexec.com/dailyfed/0703/070703ff.htm):
• A manager is responsible for you is a leader leads to a new place. • A manager deals with complexity, a leader deals with uncertainty. • A manager has to do with finding the facts, a leader makes decisions. • A manager has to do with making things right, a leader has to do with doing the right things. • A manager of the concern is efficiency; a leader focuses on effectiveness. • A manager creates policies; a leader establishes principles. • A manager sees and hears what is happening, a leader hears when there is no sound and sees when there is no light. • A manager finds answers and solutions, a leader formulates the questions and problems are identified. • A manager looks for similarities between the current and previous problems, a leader looks for differences. What? There are so many absurd statements in this list I honestly do not know where to start. Consider just one: “A manager deals with complexity, a leader deals with uncertainty.” Wait a minute – not the uncertainty and complexity go hand in hand? Assuming that “managers” in fact there are not also face the uncertainty? The uncertainty arises all the time! What is the person who wrote this waiting list to do? What if someone in your group closes and creates uncertainty about how the group? What if a key supplier goes out of business with any other provider available to do the same? In the event that all “managers” to immediately drop the carpet and mourn while screaming like crazy for some “leaders” to save them from uncertainty? No! It is a false dichotomy, the two are the same thing. To understand leadership, be clear about what is not leadership. It is not about using the latest tools and methodologies larger (eg, ERP, CRM, ISO, TQM – the name of any acronym you’d like). These are not great moments of singular crisis. These things are interesting, but not the heart and soul of leadership. What, then, is a leader? A leader is someone who does a good job every day nailing the basics of effective interpersonal relationships such that the group performs at a high level. Most articles and books on leadership dwell too long on the above issues, and many other topics such as “vision” and “charisma.” All are overrated. Leadership is the key building blocks, such as: effective communication, being open and fair, motivate others, involving conflicts productive and other development. Research clearly supports this. What is the best explanation of the moral and productivity of your group? It is not the charismatic CEO or payment. The best answer for now is the quality of interpersonal relationships that surround them every day: their subordinates, peers and superiors. Of course, these leaders tend to offer basic skills with different styles. For example, consider the communication as a basic skill. A given message can be delivered silently, succinctly and without great fanfare. Another leader may be strong, energetic and very detailed. Is one better than the other? No. The same standard applies regardless of whether they are effective: the specific communication, articulate, understanding, style etc is interesting but not distracting.
