Project Management Office, also known as PMO, are divided into three main categories. These categories have different amounts of control and influence over the projects in an enterprise. The three categories are:

1. Assist Project Management Environment
This style of leadership provides support to employees when they need help. Management may offer this support in the areas of project consultancy, access to information, templates and work tools or aids. This style is effective for organizations that allow employees to work independently, while the performance of their projects. An environment that allows employees have the freedom in designing the project. It would be a good match for offices that have effective systems to communicate and access information.

2. Office of Project Management
This approach is most effective when there is an increased need for greater supervision of project progress, procedures or documentation. This approach offers resources to provide support, but also has requirements on the standards to be met. Such a program can make demands and methods, including the provision of templates or forms to be used. They can issue authorization or other structures of the organization must comply.

The most benefit will be determined by the organizational culture and structure, as well as the company’s history of past successes and failures for each style. However, the general objectives related to a Project Management Office are:

2. Terminology used throughout the organization
3. Apply project management methods that are effective and replicable
4. Tools to provide support
5. The ultimate goal is to increase the success rate for all projects within the organization.
